The Princess Switch (2018) Movie Review
A Christmas movie "The Princess Switch" is a cliche we know by heart.
It's about two identical women, switching places. As you know, they do
the same movie every year for TV, with different actors. This one has
just a tiny difference, one of the women is a princess to be, which
doesn't make it unique either, since that's also a known version of this
cheesy formula. So the prediction before the movie was just another one
of the identical switch at christmas movies. So how was it?
The movie has a pretty weak plot. Well, it was predictable at first. Didn't have anything more special from last year's version to be more clear. Character development doesn't exists, which might be OK since it's about Christmas spirit mainly. Well, that's not the case here. Story also has no healthy development, it just goes on, all according to the formula. You can literally watch the first 5 minutes, and watch the ending afterwards. Actually, just the first 5 minutes would be enough, you can guess the ending easily with no worries. Also, the story has gaps unfilled, not just unfilled, some doesn't even get to be displayed. For example the Wise man, who doesn't have a name, and travels faster than planes and cars somehow, is such nonsense. Yet still, everyone is just OK with him being arround, even so, he walks arround in the palace without getting noticed and have little talks with all of the royal family. He even gives them advices, still, no one, literally no one even knows his name...
Shooting method is pretty decent, yet it makes you dizzy. Since the leading role Hudgens is playing them both, they just switch switch switch cameras all movie long, I was relieved to see them apart and wished for them not to come back together, such a christmas spirit hah? I would want to see a more advanced shooting, where we wouldn't have to feel like drunk after finishing the movie. Soundtracks are just fine. Like any Christmas movie, they are lined up starting with Jingle Bells, which is fine, didn't expected to hear hard rock in a Christmas romance anyway, convention is just OK. Lighting is more than enough, I guess makes sense, Christmas movies always manage to be bright, they take that very seriously, probably the only important detail in these movies for them. Anyways, it's well lit, perfectly balanced, just fine lighting.
To sum it all up, "The Princess
Switch" goes on the record just as 2018 version of some formula. Nothing
unique, nothing to be hyped about. And the bad thing is, the movie
shows no effort to break that, none whatsoever.
